About the Destination

Pictou โ€”
Birthplace of New Scotland

Pictou is a small but historically momentous town on the shores of Pictou Harbour โ€” the landing place, in 1773, of the ship Hector, which brought 189 Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia, beginning the Scottish immigration that would transform the province's culture and identity.

Today, Pictou celebrates this heritage through the Museum of the Hector, a full-scale replica of the original wooden ship, and the Hector National Historic Site. The town's Victorian streetscapes and warm community spirit make it one of the most inviting small towns on the Northumberland Shore.

The Northumberland Strait โ€” the warm, shallow sea that separates Nova Scotia from Prince Edward Island โ€” is at Pictou's doorstep. Summer water temperatures regularly reach 20ยฐC, creating some of the best swimming beaches in Atlantic Canada. Pictou is also connected to PEI by the Wood Islands ferry service โ€” a 75-minute crossing that is a destination experience in itself.

The Ship Hector

A full-scale replica of the 1773 ship that brought the first Scottish settlers to Nova Scotia โ€” docked at the Pictou waterfront.

Ship Hector replica at the Pictou waterfront

The Ship Hector is a 110-foot Dutch fluyt replica moored at Hector Heritage Quay on the Pictou waterfront โ€” a Parks Canada National Historic Site commemorating the September 1773 arrival of 189 Scottish Highlanders who made an eleven-week Atlantic crossing from Loch Broom to begin a new life in what would become known as New Scotland.

Visitors can walk the decks, tour the cramped lower hold where families spent the voyage, and visit the adjacent interpretive centre, blacksmith shop, and shipbuilders' carpentry shop. The Hector arrival is recognised as the symbolic founding moment of Scottish settlement in Canada โ€” the heritage that gives Pictou and Pictou County their distinctive character today.

If your trip to Pictou includes the Hector and Hector Heritage Quay, we deliver door-to-door from Halifax Stanfield Airport and can wait or return on a schedule that matches the museum hours.
