About the Destination

Cheticamp &
Cape Breton Highlands

Cheticamp is a vibrant Acadian fishing village on the western coast of Cape Breton Island, nestled between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the dramatic wall of the Cape Breton Highlands. With a population of around 3,000, it is the largest Acadian community in Cape Breton and one of the most culturally distinct communities in all of Nova Scotia.

The town is the western gateway to Cape Breton Highlands National Park — some 949 square kilometres of highland plateau, boreal forest, and dramatic coastal cliffs. The park's trails include the famous Skyline Trail, which offers one of the most photographed views in the Maritimes: a headland jutting into the Gulf, with the Cabot Trail switchbacks visible below.

Cheticamp is also celebrated for its hooked rug tradition — a form of textile folk art developed by the Acadian women of the region and now collected internationally. Les Trois Pignons cultural centre celebrates both the rug hooking heritage and the broader Acadian cultural identity of the community.
